Columbia bus director outlines vision

Published: September 27, 2012

Details on bus improvements that would be done with proceeds from a new sales tax in Richland County won’t be available until after the public votes.

That’s the expectation of bus-system director Bob Schneider, who gathered with reporters Thursday for an hourlong briefing on his vision for the city-county bus system.

Schneider said services cut in May could be reinstituted quickly.

He said he can’t set out more specific plans before the referendum because he doesn’t have a planner on staff.

Residents at recent public forums have been critical of the lack of detail about bus improvements that would be made if the penny tax is approved by voters Nov. 6.

Meanwhile, Schneider said a sales-tax information session specifically for bus riders has been set for 2-4 p.m. Oct. 24 at the Richland County Public Library on Assembly Street.
