Phone scammers posing as Kershaw County deputies

Published: September 28, 2012

Deputies in Kershaw County are warning about a phone scammer impersonating sheriff’s office operators.

The department has received several phone calls from victims who said someone called posing as the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office and that they were wanted for writing bad checks. The caller told the victims that they needed to send them money in order to clear up the situation, deputies say.

The caller ID entry for the caller is listed as the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office, deputies say, but the caller is impersonating the department using a method known as “spoofing.” Deputies say the calls are actually coming from out of state and a similar scam has popped up in other counties across the state.

Kershaw County deputies are asking that anyone who receives a call from someone claiming to be with the sheriff’s office to get their name and return phone number and to contact the actual Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff’s office is also asking that you do not send money to anyone claiming to be with the department.
