Deputies in Lexington County have arrested a Gaston man they say threw a baby across the room at his home.
Jason Daniel Sightler, 33, is charged with inflicting great bodily injury upon a child. An arrest warrant accuses the man of shaking a 17-month-old boy across a room at his home Sept. 26 and then putting him in a bathtub to try to revive the child.
After that, warrants allege that Sightler shook the baby violently, causing the child’s eyes to roll back into his head and have convulsions.
The baby was then taken to a hospital, the warrant states, and a doctor determined that the child had suffered from a subdural hematoma and retinal hemorrhaging. The doctor said that the injuries were consistent with blunt force trauma.
The baby’s mother had Sightler take care of the of the boy, deputies say. The man had cared for the child several times before the Sept. 26 incident.
The child was treated and released from a local hospital, deputies say. He’s living with relatives.
Sightler is being held at Lexington County Detention Center on a $75,000 bond.
