Elderly moped driver killed in Tuesday morning collision in Elgin

A 79-year-old Elgin man was killed Tuesday morning when his moped crossed the center line of Kelly Mill Road at Gibbs Road in Elgin and hit the side of a van heading the other direction.

The man, who has not been identified by the Richland County Coroner’s office, was driving a 3-wheel moped and not wearing a helmet, South Carolina Highway Patrol’s Corporal Brent Kelly said in a release. The man was declared dead on the scene of the 8:50 a.m. collision which occurred near the Bridge Creek Elementary School.
