Elgin man, 79, dies in scooter-van collision

A 79-year-old Elgin man was killed in a collision Tuesday morning in Richland County.

Earnest F. Elliott was killed when his three-wheeled moped collided with a minivan on Kelly Mill Road, Richland County Coroner' Gary Watts said.

Around 8:50 a.m., a Honda Odyssey driven by Silvia Veltula, 38, Blythewood, was traveling north on Kelly Mill Road as the scooter driver was heading south near Gibbs Road, SC Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Brent Kelly said. Elliott’s address is listed on Gibbs road, Watts said.

For unknown reasons, the scooter crossed the center line and struck the van on its left side, Kelly said.

Elliott was not wearing a helmet and died of massive head trauma, Watts said.. Veltula was not injured.
