A.C. Flora vs. Chapin

Site: Memorial Stadium.

Game notes: For the second week in a row, A.C. Flora (5-1, 1-0 Region 4-3A) put on a record offensive display. A week after scoring a single-game record of 63 points in a win over Airport, the potent Falcons broke the record by 21 points while thumping Camden by a mind-blowing score of 84-51. The ninth-ranked Falcons matched the one-week old record by the end of the third quarter at Zemp Stadium, In the end, ACF amassed 675 yards, 486 on the ground. The feature runners were JuWan Simon (11-165-2), Keith Goss (5-98-3), Jake Lewis (11-91-2) and James Croffie (5-77-1). The Falcons averaged 10.8 yards on their 45 running attempts. Lewis also found time to go 8-for-9 passing for 189 yards and two touchdowns. Shelton Whittaker had four catches for 139 yards and two TDs. No defense that surrenders eight touchdowns and more than 600 yards in a game – win or lose – deserves recognition. Lewis has been brilliant in his first season as the starting quarterback. The junior is 46-for-68 for 860 yards and seven touchdowns with just one interception. He is also second on the team in rushing with 391 yards and eight TDs on 84 carries. Aven Pollard (37-418-8) is the nominal rushing leader. Whittaker (14-394-4) and Schroder Carlton (11-180-3) are the big-play receiving threats … Chapin (2-4, 1-0) spotted first-year Westwood a 7-0 lead, and then scored 28 unanswered points to secure a 28-13 win. Jacob Eddington had 113 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 19 carries. Eddington’s 1-yard run accounted for Chapin’s first points with less than a minute to go in the first quarter, and his 80-yard scoring dash was the final Eagles TD of the contest in the fourth. Matt Charpia had a good passing game – hitting 7 of 10 throws and 119 yards and one scores – a 54-yard hookup with Alex Young.

Series history: Chapin has wins in the only two meetings of the teams (2008-09).

Westwood vs. Dreher

Site:Westwood District 2 Stadium.

Game notes: Dreher (5-1, 0-1 Region 4-3A) suffered its first setback of the season in its region opener last week – a 32-21 loss to Lower Richland. The Blue Devils productive running game was thwarted by LR’s big and active defensive line, and ended up with just 70 yards rushing on 25 carries. Hakim Frazier had his best passing game of the season – hitting 15 of 30 throws from 190 yards and one touchdown. He also led the team with 42 yards rushing … Westwood (0-6, 0-1) had a 7-6 lead at halftime, but eventually fell 28-13 to Chapin in the program’s first region outing. Miquelle Canaday and Raymond Hall accounted for the Westwood touchdowns with scoring runs. Davis King was 13-for-22 passing for 125 yards and did not throw an interception.

Series history: The teams are meeting for the first time.

Lower Richland vs. Camden

Site: Lower Richland Stadium.

Game notes: Lower Richland (2-4, 1-0 Region 4-3A) handed Dreher its first loss of the season last week, scoring an impressive 32-21 win over the Blue Devils in the region opener for both teams. Marcus Edmond was the Diamond Hornets star with 213 yards passing and four touchdown throws on offensive while picking off two passes on defensive duty. Alonzo Gibson was dominant on the defensive line, helping limit Dreher to 70 rushing yards and a 2.8-yard average per carry. LR had a 32-7 lead with 10 minutes to go … Camden (2-4, 0-1) is coming off an astonishing 84-51 loss to A.C. Flora. QB Josh Council had a record day in defeat – connecting on 19 of 34 passes for 413 yards (new single-game school mark) and seven touchdowns (new single-game school mark). Wide receivers Cedric Cook and Jerel Holloman joined in the aerial bounty. Cook caught five balls for 126 yards and four scores, while Holloman turned three receptions into 168 yards and one tally. The Bulldogs however, continue to be ineffective on defense. In fact, Camden is allowing a whopping average of 46.5 points a game.

Series history: The Diamond Hornets and Bulldogs are squaring off for the first time in 29 years. Camden was a 7-3 winner in the last encounter in 1983. The teams were 4A region rivals for eight seasons (1976-83). During that span, Camden posted seven wins. LR’s only triumph against the Kershaw County crew was in 1978.

Gilbert vs. Brookland-Cayce

Site: Tomahawk Stadium.

Game notes: Gilbert (2-4, 0-1 Region 5-3A) dropped a 33-14 decision to Midland Valley in its first-ever 3A region game. Omar Bethea ran for 124 yards and one touchdown on 23 carries, but the Indians fate was seal by seven turnovers – three fumble lost, four interceptions … Brookland-Cayce (1-5, 0-1) fell 56-10 to Strom Thurmond. On a positive note quarterbacks Drew Towery and Kozy Brown combined for 240 yards passing.

Series history: The teams split two non-region games (2002 and 2003) in the only previous meetings of the Lexington County schools.

Midland Valley vs. Swansea

Site: L.L. Willis Stadium.

Game notes: Unbeaten, sixth-ranked Swansea (6-0, 1-0 Region 5-3A) had a much more enjoyable experience in last week’s return to 3A conference play. The Tigers, who went 3-17 in its first taste of region play at the 3A level (2006-09), opened serious play at the higher level this time with 22-0 win over Airport. Travis Loadholt did not score, but he drove the Swansea attack with 150 yards rushing on 35 carries. Randy Brown and Johnathon Sutton had scoring runs and Jordan Chavis connected with Robbie Brown on a scoring pass. Chavis was 6-for-16 passing for 163 yards, while Brown had five catches for 154 yards. Sutton had a big game of defense with a team high nine tackles and two tackles for loss. Terrance Salley had seven tackles and four tackles for loss. The stout Tigers unit limited Airport to 123 total yards, with a meager 20 coming on the ground. To date, Loadholt has 860 yards rushing and eight TDs on the books. Chavis has thrown for 897 yards and 11 scores. Brown has 23 catches for 442 yards and five touchdowns. Salley also has five scoring receptions, while ringing up 13 tackles for loss, seven sacks and one interception return for another score. Byron Johnson leads the team with 37 tackles and also has 7 tackles for loss and four sacks to his credit. … Midland Valley (2-4, 1-0) has won two in a row after enduring a 10-game losing streak. The Mustangs hung a 33-14 loss on Gilbert in the region opener thanks in large measure to three fumble recoveries and four interceptions.

Series history: Swansea went 0-4 against Midland Valley during its first foray into Region 5-3A play (2006-09).

Strom Thurmond vs. Airport

Site: Strom Thurmond Stadium.

Game notes: Slumping Airport (3-3, 0-1 Region 5-3A) has dropped three of its last four games, including a 22-0 setback at Swansea. It was the Eagles first shutout region loss since dropping down to 3A in 2004. Airport has had serious trouble establishing the running game during the recently slide. Last week, the yields was just 20 yards against the Tigers. QB Sir Sutton is 41-for-77 passing for 540 yards and four touchdowns, but the most productive Eagle in receiver Anthony Steward, who has 15 catches for 276 yards, 172 yards on various kick returns and scored a team high 30 points. Steward also has 24 tackles and two interceptions on defense. The top hit men on defense are Rodney Smith (45 tackles, 3 sacks) and Ladarius Anderson (43 tackles, 2 sacks) … Sixth-ranked Strom Thurmond (5-1, 1-0) has yet to lose to a South Carolina side. Last week the explosive Rebels ripped Brookland-Cayce 56-10 in their return to 3A region play.

Series history: The teams have met four times in Airport’s early days in Class 3A. The Eagles only win came in the last clash with the Rebels in 2007.
