Prep Talk | Football Friday Primer

October 5, 2012

This morning's story on Octavius Thomas is a great example of how Myrtle Beach football stretches beyond the here and now.

Thomas, the senior linebacker attempting to add a fifth state title to his family tree, is one of handful of Seahawk players following in the footsteps of a father, uncle or older brother by wearing the green and gold.

"There’s a sense of pride and tradition there from the guys that played before us, whether it be a father that played on the ’81 state championship or a brother who played on 2008 championship," said Myrtle Beach coach Mickey Wilson, himself a Conway grad. "I think there’s a sense of pride there. I think that’s very important. I think our kids look into that, and they know what’s come before them."

Tonight's game against Socastee (who is also 6-0) is where some of that pride really starts to stand out. Myrtle Beach knows that in order to win a state title, it first has to set up solid playoff seeding. An undefeated run through Region VII-AAA would do just that, and - as stated in the above story on Thomas - the region winner is positioned to received three home playoff games.

Maybe we're getting ahead of ourselves a bit, though. At hand first is Socastee-Myrtle Beach. Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium is going to be jammed anyway. It's also homecoming.

Here's the preview capsule for the Braves' trip to Myrtle Beach, our Grand Strand Game of the Week. And in a game full of stars, Myrtle Beach's Trell Harrell is one to keep an eye on specifically (link broken; I'll try to re-add it later. If not, know Harrell has seven touchdowns in the last three weeks).

Not to be forgotten, though, is nine other games, along with their preview capsules. Some these games also have significant consequences for both teams.

Here's a look at our Area's Best, AKA the Grand Strand football power rankings.

Here's a list of offensive statistical leaders for The Sun News' coverage area.

In case you missed it earlier this week, News 13's Jeff Zell and I ran through all the biggest storylines on the Grand Strand Weekly Web Chat.

The Florence Morning News and reporter Lou Bezjak advanced Conway's trip to West Florence, a game that has crucial implications for the Tigers. If Conway and coach Chuck Jordan pull out the victory, they'll immediately go from 2-4 team to with a solid chance of winning Region VI-AAAA.

Add it all up, and it led to my weekly Pigskin Pick 'Em. I was 9-0 last week, and a 10-0 week tonight has a nice ring to it.

Hopefully I didn't miss anything.
