Fire destroys Columbia home

Published: October 11, 2012

Large clouds of smoke over the Shop Road area of Columbia on Thursday afternoon issued from a mobile home destroyed by fire.

The Columbia-Richland County Fire Department was called to the home at 1241 Tolliver St. around 1:36 p.m., spokesman Brick Lewis said.

The home was about 80 percent engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. An occupant was able to get out of the home and suffered minor injuries.

Because the fire burned so rapidly, crews did not enter the home, but fought it externally, Lewis said.

There was no information immediately available about where and how the fire started.

Drivers travelling on Shop Road near the fire should expect to detour onto Bluff Road on either side of Tolliver Street while crews are fighting the blaze.
