Columbia Police officers involved in shooting

Published: October 15, 2012

Two Columbia Police Department officers were involved in a shooting about 5 p.m. Monday, department spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons said.

The officers, with the force’s drug suppression team, were patrolling the area after receiving a call that there was a man with a gun in the Belmont community near Fairfield Road, Timmons said. They confronted two men in the street in 700 block of Vernon Drive and at least one of the officers fired their service weapon.

The officers were uninjured, but one of the suspect was taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds, Timmons said. His injuries are not expected to be life threatening. The other suspect was taken into custody.

The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the incident, Timmons said.
