Richland County sales-tax forum set for Monday

Details have been set on a forum about the proposed penny-on-the-dollar sales tax for transportation in Richland County.

The Monday night debate, sponsored by the Community Relations Council, begins at 6 p.m. at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center, 1101 Lincoln St., Columbia. Moderator is former television anchor David Stanton.

Speaking in favor of the initiative are Lee Bussell, chairman of the board of the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce; Jennifer Harding, a member of the Central Midlands Regional Transit Authority Board; Columbia City Councilman Brian DeQuincey Newman; and Richland County Councilman Paul Livingston.

Speaking against the tax increase are Don Weaver, president of the S.C. Association of Taxpayers; ecumenical Bishop Redfern II; Michael Letts, a candidate for Richland County Council; and Daniel Rickenmann, a former member of Columbia City Council.

People submitting questions to participants may arrive starting at 5:30 p.m.
