Winnsboro police officer Michael Bernard Roseboro, 43, shot himself in the chest Thursday evening as law enforcement officers closed in on him at a campground near Great Falls, South Carolina Law Enforcement Division spokesman Thom Berry said.
Roseboro has been on the run since Sunday night after he allegedly shot and wounded his estranged wife in front of their children in Winnsboro.
The search for Roseboro moved to the Camp Welfare Church camp near Great Falls Thursday afternoon.
The camp is not far from his sisters home and we knew there were a number of cabins there, Berry said.
As the grounds were searched, officers overheard Fairfield County Chief Deputy Keith Lewis talking to Roseboro, whom he has known for many years.
The conversation sounded amicable, not confrontational Berry said. Without warning, Roseboro shot himself in the upper chest, Berry said.
The shooting occurred in a large open air building at the campsite around 6:30 p.m. Officers found a foam mattress on the scene suggesting Roseboro may have been at the camp several days, Berry said.
Roseboro was taken to Palmetto Health Richland. His condition is unknown.
