$2M South Carolina lottery winner claims prize

Published: November 2, 2012

— A man who won a $2 million prize in a Halloween Powerball drawing has come forward, and after an emotional turn plans to stay level headed.

The ticket matched all five white ball numbers drawn in Oct. 31’s drawing for the multistate lottery, and the PowerPlay option bumped the $1 million prize up to $2 million.

The ticket was bought at the Corner Pantry at 8750 Farrow Road and had the numbers 1, 27, 31, 45 and 48. Those numbers beat the odds of 1 in 5,153,633.

The winner, who is remaining anonymous, told lottery workers he was cooking breakfast Nov. 1 when he remembered to check his ticket.

When he looked at the numbers, he cried.

“I broke down,” he said.

The supervisor from Lexington said he will invest his winnings and retire early, but will continue going to work for now.

Corner Pantry received a $20,000 commission for selling the claimed ticket.

The ticket is the second $2 million winner sold in Columbia this year.
