COLUMBIA, SC — A wreck involving two motorcycles traveling on Huger Street resulted in a death early Tuesday morning.
Jonathan S. Buckner, 29, of Louisa Lane, Lexington, died after his motorcycle helmet came off during the wreck, said Richland County Coroner Gary Watts.
Buckner was traveling outbound on Huger Street toward Broad River Road on a 2003 Suzuki motorcycle when he struck a guardrail, Watts said. He and a passenger on the motorcycle were thrown off the bike.
Buckner died at the scene, Watts said. The passenger, who has not been identified, was taken to Palmetto Health Richland, Watts said.
Columbia Police Department spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons said first responders reported two motorcycles were traveling outbound on Huger Street toward Broad River Road bridge when the collision happened. .
The cause of the collision has not been determined and remains under investigation.
Survivors of the wreck were taken to the hospital.
Traffic initially was rerouted since Huger Street and Elmwood Avenue were blocked off. By 7:30 a.m., one outbound lane on Elmwood was reopened, but outbound Huger remained closed.
