— A man accused of attacking and robbing a 62-year-old woman in a grocery story parking lot didn’t get far as witnesses captured him for police.

Juan Ashley, 30, is accused of attacking the victim at the Kroger at 10136 Two Notch Road around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, the Richland County Sheriff’s Department said. Witnesses said Ashley grabbed the woman’s purse and knocked her to the ground.

Ashley is accused of then ripping the purse out of the woman’s grip and fleeing. However, nearby witnesses captured and held him until deputies arrived, the department said.

Before he was captured, Ashley dropped the purse, but it was picked up by a second suspect in a white Chevrolet HHR, the department said. That vehicle matched one seen at the Arby’s a few blocks away, where witnesses saw someone toss it into a trash bin, cash and credit cards removed.

The victim was treated on the scene for injuries.

The case remains under investigation.

Ashley was transported to Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
