Lexington County district 3 loser trying to keep winner off council

Published: November 9, 2012

Second-place finisher Darrell Hudson is seeking to keep Republican winner Kent Collins off Lexington County Council.

Hudson asked county election officials Friday to declare Collins ineligible to hold the post in District 3, which includes most of the town of Lexington and areas to its north and west. In his challenge, Hudson alleges that Collins did not comply with state ethics rules on disclosure of personal finances.

Hudson and three other candidates in the match were forced to mount petition drives to qualify for the ballot after being removed for failure to meet the same standard.

GOP leaders initially removed Hudson but let Collins remain on the ballot after a review.

Collins then won the GOP nomination by default, running unopposed in the June 12 primary election.

Hudson says he has new information that Collins did not meet the requirement.

Collins, a former prosecutor, could not be reached for comment.

If the challenge is successful, Hudson would be in position to claim the post.
