Red Cross issues scam alert

The (Myrtle Beach) Sun NewsNovember 10, 2012

The Red Cross of Eastern North Carolina issued a scam alert Friday after learning people posing as Red Cross staff members were offering to pay workers to travel to the Northeast for storm recovery efforts.

The scam asks people to gather at a local public parking lot to load in a van or bus to travel to New York and New Jersey offering a lump sum per day.

The American Red Cross does not pay for volunteer workers to aid in any disasters. All volunteers are required to have a background check and go through extensive disaster training before being deployed.

Any deployment will come with official travel arrangements and paperwork directed through an official staff member.
