Columbia donation drives to aid Superstorm Sandy’s New Jersey victims

Two donation drives are under way to aid New Jersey victims of Superstorm Sandy.

• In Five Points, donations of cleaning supplies such as bleach, mops, brooms and detergents are being collected. Organizers also are asking for work gloves and boots, smoke detectors and first aid supplies. Drop them off at Sid and Nancy, 733 Saluda Ave., from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Sunday. Donations will be delivered Monday.

• Through Thursday, donations of basic home supplies are being accepted at The Turning Pointe at 5143 Forest Drive in Forest Acres (between Trenholm Plaza and Wal-Mart) between 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Specific items needed include blankets, batteries, toilet paper, paper towels, bleach, socks, winter coats and gloves, baby wipes, under garments, feminine products, soap, deodorant, garbage bags, plastic rubber shoes, shovels and brooms, diapers, toothbrushes, and cleaning supplies. Tax deductible monetary donations also are being accepted and can be made payable to SCCDC (South Carolina Contemporary Dance Company) and designated to Sandy Relief. Donations will be delivered at the end of this week.
