Suspect sought in Spartanburg machete attack

The (Spartanburg) Herald JournalNovember 20, 2012

— Officers are looking for a Spartanburg man accused of beating his roommate with a sledgehammer and then cutting him with a machete Monday night.

According to a written statement from the Spartanburg Public Safety Department, an arrest warrant has been obtained for Ricky Lee White, 21, accusing him of attempted murder.

At about 6:15 p.m. Monday, officers responded to a West Wood Street home in reference to an assault. After the victim was transported to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center for treatment, he told an officer that he was lying on the couch when White struck him with the sledgehammer several times in the chest, according to an incident report.

White is then accused of grabbing a machete and cutting the victim multiple times. According to the report, the victim was able to wrestle the machete away from White and throw it toward a door, and when White went to the kitchen to get another knife, the victim ran out the front door. Police said a verbal argument preceded the attack and that both men live together but are not related.

The victim received seven staples in his head, and his arm was placed in a sling. He was released from the hospital early Tuesday morning.

Police have not located White.

Anyone with information about White's whereabouts is asked to call the Public Safety Department at 864-596-2065, or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIMESC.
