Extra patrols and check points planned on some Midlands roads

With increased holiday travel this season comes extra patrols by local law enforcement.

The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department announced Wednesday that, in conjunction with the South Carolina Highway Patrol and local agencies, it would be conducting “enhanced traffic safety patrols” from Friday through Sunday.

Area drivers from Edgefield, Lexington, McCormick and Saluda counties may encounter unscheduled traffic check points and more patrol cars than usual, Sheriff James Metts said in a press release.

Deputies will be strictly enforcing all S.C. laws with particular emphasis on driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Richland County has no plans for special enforcement enhancements, spokesman Curtis Wilson said. The normal full complement of patrol cars will be deployed over the holiday weekend.
