Gamecocks outlast Arkansas to close season

Sending 2012 seniors Taylor Bruns and Christina Glover out in style, South Carolina (18-14, 6-14 SEC) outlasted Arkansas in a five-set win (24-26, 25-18, 26-28, 19-25, 15-10) on Friday afternoon at the Volleyball Competition Facility. Bruns posted 52 assists, four kills, two aces and seven digs in the victory. Glover added a career-high three aces. Junior outside hitter Juliette Thévenin led all players with 26 kills. The Gamecocks, under second-year coach Scott Swanson, posted the second winning season in a decade at South Carolina.

South Africa spent $3 billion on 2010 World Cup

South Africa spent just over $3 billion on the 2010 World Cup, the first held in Africa. South Africa’s government said Friday it spent $1.1 billion on building and upgrading stadiums. Transport was the biggest cost, with $1.3 billion dedicated to upgrading road, rail and air links. FIFA reported it made a $631 million profit from the 2007-10 World Cup cycle and earned income of $3.65 billion from 2010 World Cup contracts.

NHL cancels games through Dec. 14, All-Star game

More than a third of the NHL regular season and two of its marquee events now have been called off. The league announced its latest round of cancellations — Day 69 of its labor lockout. All games through Dec. 14 were wiped out, and this time All-Star Weekend, scheduled for Jan. 26-27 in Columbus, Ohio, was lost, too. The New Year’s Day outdoor Winter Classic already was scratched.
