RICHLAND COUNTY, SC — CSX crews were trying to reattach two train cars Thursday evening that had come loose on tracks near the Riverbanks Zoo.
The train was blocking traffic in and out of the zoo’s parking lot. Columbia police were assisting with traffic that had backed up near the zoo’s entrance on Greystone Boulevard, said Jennifer Timmons, a police spokeswoman.
CSX crews got the train rolling after 6 p.m., said Carla Groleau, a CSX spokeswoman. The train had three engines that were pulling 110 cars from Spartanburg to Cayce, Groleau said.
Groleau said the train had “a minor mechanical issue” but Timmons said police at the scene learned from railroad workers on the scene that two cars had become separated.
“We certainly apologize for any inconvenience to our neighbors in the area,” Groleau said.
