Richland County, SC — I have worked as a poll manager and a precinct clerk in Florida and in Richland County for many years. I don’t do it for the money, which is nominal. I do it because of my belief in the importance of elections. I also do it because of my love of our political process. That is, up until now.
I will refuse to do this anymore as long as Lillian McBride remains in charge of Richland County’s office of elections and voter registration.
Her repeated attempts to duck responsibility for the election fiasco by blaming her predecessor and her staff are galling. My three fellow poll managers and I at Ward 11 did our level best to treat every voter with professionalism and respect. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of Ms. McBride. Her inability to complete an investigation in 20 days — the amount of time between the Nov. 6 election and a Nov. 26 legislative delegation hearing — as to what caused this fiasco is tantamount to treating the entire electorate in Richland County with contempt.
Why would I want to work another 16-hour day at the polls if she is in charge? The answer is I don’t, and I won’t.
