Just minutes after Sen. Jim DeMint announced his resignation from Congress yesterday, South Carolina politicos were quick to toss out names of possible replacements for the Greenville candidate. But one name quickly rose to national prominence: Stephen Colbert.

After reports from national media outlets announced that Gov. Nikki Haley could select the satirist and Charleston native to replace DeMint in the U.S. Senate, Colbert announced asked fans of his show "The Colbert Report" to tweet Haley reasons he should take the seat using the hashtag #SenatorColbert.

Haley, who appeared on "The Colbert Report" in April, answered the thousands of tweets she received in support of Colbert Friday morning with a post on her Facebook page.

"Thank you for your interest in South Carolina's U.S. Senate seat and for the thousands of tweets you and your fans sent me," she said to Colbert.

Haley continued, "but you forgot one thing, my friend. You don't know our state drink. Big, big mistake."

Colbert twice launched mock campaigns in 2008 and again in 2012, attempting to only get on the ballot in his home state of South Carolina.
