KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Trae Golden scored 25 points and Tennessee beat No. 23 Wichita State 69-60 on Thursday night to snap a two-game losing streak and hand the Shockers their first loss.
Tennessee shot 47.5 percent to end a brutal offensive slump. In its two games leading to this one, the Volunteers had lost 37-36 to Georgetown in the SEC/Big East Challenge on Nov. 30 and 46-38 at Virginia on Dec. 5.
Jordan McRae had 17 points for Tennessee (5-3).
Carl Hall had 21 points and nine rebounds for Wichita State (9-1), which was seeking to go 10-0 for the first time.
STATE MEN
ANDERSON 65, COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON 49
At Charleston, Chandler Hash scored 19 points and Denzail Jones 17 as Anderson, an NCAA Division II school, defeated College of Charleston.
The Trojans (6-2), who counted the game as an exhibition, took advantage of 19 turnovers by the Cougars (5-4) while committing seven. They also outshot Charleston, which made as many field goals in the game (16 of 48) as Anderson made in the first half (16 of 29).
Adjehi Baru scored 11 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for Charleston.
COASTAL CAROLINA 75, TOCCOA FALLS 38
At Conway, Anthony Raffa scored 15 points and Warren Gillis 13 as Coastal Carolina opened the second half with a 30-2 run.
Raffa scored 13 of his points during that game-breaking run by the Chanticleers (3-5), who shot 52.7 percent (29 of 55) for the game.
Rutgers suspends coach
Rutgers suspended coach Mike Rice three games without pay and fined him $50,000 for a violation of department policy.
Athletics director Tim Pernetti said the suspension is a result of inappropriate behavior and language, not NCAA violations.
