CLEMSON — Clemson starting cornerback Bashaud Breeland will miss the Chick-Fil-A Bowl because of a groin injury.

Tigers coach Dabo Swinney said Breeland would have surgery Thursday. No. 14 Clemson (10-2) will take on ninth-ranked LSU (10-2) at the Georgia Dome on New Year’s Eve.

Breeland started five of the first seven games for Clemson. But he played in three of the final five contests due to the injury. Swinney said Breeland had been practicing and hoped to be ready to face LSU.

Clemson’s Rodriguez wins Orange Bowl Courage Award

Clemson receiver Daniel Rodriguez is this year’s winner of the Orange Bowl-Football Writers Association of America Courage Award, as selected by a panel of FWAA members. Rodriguez, a redshirt freshman from Stafford, Va., is playing for the Tigers after being awarded a Purple Heart and Bronze Star in Afghanistan.

Rodriguez, 24, was wounded Oct. 3, 2009, during a battle near Kamdesh, Afghanistan, while serving in the U.S. Army. Combat Outpost Keating, in a mountainous region near the Pakistan border, was ambushed by nearly 300 Taliban insurgents. Eight Americans were killed; 22 were injured. Rodriguez was shot and wounded in the leg, neck and shoulder.

Andersen on way to Wisconsin

Wisconsin reportedly will hire Gary Andersen to replace Bret Bielema, who left the Badgers earlier this month to take the Arkansas coaching job.

The news about Andersen, 48, broke Tuesday night but neither Utah State nor Wisconsin had anything official to announce about Andersen on Wednesday. The delay is at least in part tied to laws in Wisconsin that require a state job to be posted for at least two weeks before it can be filled. The two-week posting was up at the end of business on Wednesday.

The school was expected to introduce Andersen at a news conference today, but a snowstorm might change those plans.

Two plead guilty in attack on Wisconsin’s Ball

Two of the three men accused of assaulting Wisconsin running back Montee Ball this summer pleaded guilty to battery charges, but both were given a chance to avoid prison.

Wendell J. Venerable, 21, and Robert A. Wilks, 22, pleaded guilty to substantial battery, a felony that carries a maximum penalty of 18 months in prison. But instead of imposing a prison sentence, Dane County Judge Rebecca St. John placed them in a first-offenders program.

Cowboys Stadium will have Labor Day games into ’24

The Labor Day weekend show at Cowboys Stadium will include a game through at least 2024. ESPN and the Dallas Cowboys have reached a lengthy extension for the Cowboys Classic.

The announcement included unveiling the matchup for 2014, when Oklahoma State plays Florida State.

FCS title game to stay in Texas

The NCAA announced a three-year extension to stage its Football Championship Subdivision title game at FC Dallas Stadium in Frisco, Texas. That will keep the game in the suburb north of Dallas through at least the 2015 season.
