Turnovers doomed Heathwood Hall in a 59-54 loss to Edgewater (FL) in the second round of the CresCom Bank Holiday Invitational girls basketball tournament at the Myrtle beach Convention Center.
The Highlanders (4-5) went head-to-head with the Eagles in most statistical categories, except one turnovers. Heathwood Hall was charged with 18 giveaways, which led to a decisive 21-6 edge for the Floridians in points off turnovers.
Still, Heathwood had a chance at the end after a three-point play by Chelsea Joseph cut the Edgewater lead to 54-51 with 26 seconds to go. But the Eagles put it away by going 6-for-6 at the free-throw line down the stretch.
Aja Wilson had her second double-double of the tournament. The 6-foot-5 junior forward scored 19 points on 8-for-14 shooting and hauled down 16 rebounds. Wilson also wowed the crowd with eight blocks.
Joseph was the only other double-digit producer with 10 points. Senior Erin Ress had a solid game with six points, five assists and two steals.
Heathwood Hall falls into the consolation bracket and will face another Florida team, Atlantic, at 3:15 p.m. on Friday. The Highlanders must win to rate another game on Saturday.
