ACF wins another Classic thriller

Published: December 21, 2012

A.C. Flora advanced to the championship round of the Chick-fil-A Classic with a 65-61 win over Flora Macdonald Academy (NC) on Friday at Richland Northeast. The Falcons will face Deerfield Beach (FL) in the Classic II title game Saturday at 7 p.m.

ACF, which beat Hillcrest in the first round with a game-winning shot with five seconds to go, came up big with time waning again. The Falcons (5-4) iced this one when Matt Howard and Diquan Grant hit two free throws apiece with 18 and six seconds remaining, respectively.

Howard scored 19 points, but had to take second billing this time to sophomore Rion Davis, who deposited 31 points on 15-for-23 shooting from the field. Howard’s contributions also included six rebounds, three blocks, three assists and two steals. Grant’s two clutch free throws that made it a two-possession game were his only points of the contest.
