Columbia, SC — This Congress is on track to become the least productive since the mid-1940s, in part thanks to the filibuster rule, whose use has gotten so out of hand that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell even filibustered his own bill this month.
Alexander Hamilton warned against the tyranny of the minority in Federalist No. 22, saying its only purpose is to humiliate the government, not to succeed in anything. He was referring to the power of smaller states to block the larger states’ majority, but the same principle applies. If a minority perpetually prohibits progress, it not only becomes tyranny but eventually will devolve into anarchy, inflaming the passions of both sides by inhibiting the government from moving on with its necessary business.
The U.S. government is founded upon the principle of majority rule, but this is being perverted by a vicious minority in the Senate.
