Victim from New Year’s Day shooting identified; case remains under investigation

Published: January 2, 2013

— No arrests have been made in a New Year’s Day shooting that left a Northeast Richland County man dead.

Roderick Day, 23, of Powell Road died from complications from a single gunshot wound to his upper body, Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said. He died at Palmetto Health Richland, the Richland County Sheriff’s Department reported.

Sheriff’s deputies arrived at Day’s home to find his girlfriend performing CPR on him, a sheriff’s department press release said. The girlfriend, who has not been identified, had shot Day, said Deputy Curtis Wilson, a sheriff’s spokesman.

The shooting was originally reported as domestic dispute but the sheriff’s department has backed off that description of the shooting.

Investigators are trying to find out what happened before the shooting and the circumstances around it, Wilson said. Once the investigation is finished, the investigators will determine whether the shooting was an accident or whether criminal charges should be filed, the release stated.
