South Carolina State, working to cut $5.8 million amid a year of leadership turmoil and falling enrollment, has lost another trustee.
Greenville businessman Jonathan Pinson resigned last week to spend more time with his family, a school spokeswoman said Wednesday.
Pinson stepped down as a chairman in February soon after the state's only historically black public university fired eight key staff members and just before school president George Cooper announced his resignation and a former SLED chief said he found undisclosed criminal issues at the college.
Pinson remained on the board as three other trustees have departed.
State lawmakers tried removing all or some trustees this year.
Meanwhile, two trustees had claimed to head the board until a vote late last month put former educator Walter Tobin in charge.
Pinson, the owner of Professional Staffing Solutions in Greenville and Memphis, has Columbia-area ties in co-owning the Hilton Convention Center Hotel and Travinias Italian Kitchen Restaurant.
