The response to the Sandy Hook tragedy by the NRA, as well as the Republican Party, is astonishing not only for its brazen effort to blame anything other than guns (video games, movies, perhaps even the Easter Bunny) but also for its solution — more guns, turning our schools into armed camps.
I am reminded of the adage, “if the only tool you have is a hammer, then everything looks like a nail.” The NRA’s solution to all of society’s problems is, you guessed it, more guns: The solution to carnage is to put more weapons in the hands of more people, enabling more carnage.
These purveyors of death and destruction should be ashamed of themselves. Instead of wanting to keep our children safe, they cling steadfastly to an 18th century concept that only creates one tragedy after another.
It is time to say enough is enough. It is time to demand not more guns in this country, but fewer guns. It is time to demand that all weapon purchases require a thorough background check. It is time to demand that all assault weapons and high-capacity magazines be banned. Don’t our children deserve this?
