Lexington driver charged with felony DUI in Irmo pedestrian’s death

January 7, 2013

— An Irmo man died in a hit-and-run accident late Sunday along Lake Murray Boulevard.

Raymond A. Geiger, 39, was killed around 10:36 p.m. when he was struck while walking on the sidewalk in the 1100 block of Lake Murray Boulevard in Irmo, coroner Harry O. Harman said. Geiger was pronounced dead at the scene.

Irmo police arrested David Lee Smith, 46, of Shoalwood Drive, Lexington, and charged him with felony driving under the influence.

According to police, the suspect was driving a 2006 Land Rover LR3 eastbound on Lake Murray Boulevard when it left the road and struck Geiger, who was walking westbound on the sidewalk.

Irmo police allege the suspect was unsteady on his feet and his speech was slurred. In addition, two witnesses told officers that the suspect allegedly had been weaving across the road just prior to the collision.

Smith was denied bond and is being held at the Lexington County Detention Center.

The Lexington County Coroner’s Office and Irmo Police Department, with the assistance of the South Carolina Highway Patrol MAIT Team, are investigating.
