In light of the recent violent tragedies, I asked myself, “why are we in this situation?” The answer can be found in our relationship with violence. We are far too accepting of violence. In fact, we are addicted to it.
Let’s ask ourselves why we watch violent movies and TV shows, play violent video games, read about violence and watch news reports about violence. Why do we buy toys and clothing that support violence? Because it brings us pleasure. How would we feel if we gave up using violence as a means of entertainment and pleasure? Are we afraid we might not feel the thrill, the pleasure and the high we enjoy? This is how people with addictions feel.
We can rise higher as human beings and as a nation. Starting today, we can go on a 30-day, no-violence diet. We do not use, buy, wear, watch, read, listen to or play with anything that promotes violence.
We can change the level of violence experienced in our country by changing our attitude about it. Together we can create a nation that lives in peace.
