RICHLAND COUNTY, SC — A gas station employee shot a man suspected of stealing two cases of beer early Tuesday morning, according to the Richland County Sheriffs Department.
The man, identified as 30-year-old Andrew Walker, was shot multiple times by an employee at a Shell station at 7441 Parklane Road after taking the beer from the store without paying, Richland County Sheriffs Department spokesman Curtis Wilson said. He was taken to Palmetto Health Richland hospital, where he was treated for non life-threatening injuries.
The employee tried to stop Walker as the man left the store, Wilson said. The employee, armed with a handgun, shot at the man after he got into a car with a second suspect.
Walker will be charged with shoplifting when he is released from the hospital, Wilson said. The second suspect, 50-year-old Clyde Manigo, was charged with shoplifting and was being held Tuesday at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
The sheriffs department is working with the 5th Circuit Solicitors Office to determine whether the employee should be charged with a crime.
