LEXINGTON COUNTY, SC — A Pelion 24-year-old is accused of shooting a 16-year-old girl Tuesday night.
Benton Chavis Jr. is charged with discharging a firearm in into an occupied motor vehicle, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and three counts of attempted murder, Lexington County deputies said. He is being held at Lexington County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.
Warrants allege that Chavis fired at least five shots from a handgun at a 1994 Chevrolet pickup truck in the 100 block of Canal Drive about 6:30 p.m. after the truck’s driver asked him and a group of other people to stop walking in the roadway. Shots were fired at the truck as it drove away.
Two of the truck’s three passengers were uninjured, but the 16-year-old girl was shot in the back and had to b e transported to Palmetto Health Richland.
The gunshot wound doesn’t appear to be life threatening, deputies said, but the girl was still in the hospital Wednesday afternoon.
One of the people in the truck gave officers a description of the shooter and two other witnesses identified Chavis as the shooter. He was arrested at his home later.
