If a man has worked for you for seven years — as Scott Compton has for Chapin High School — you should know by now whether he is honest. Does one mistake in all that time justify firing him? Do you really believe that in stomping the flag his intent was to be disrespectful, or do you believe him when he says it was done as part of a lesson?
Even though it was not the smartest thing he may have done in seven years, surely there should be some way to atone for it. Surely our community does not really want to lose another teacher; they are too valuable to dismiss when second chances are as easy to come by as looking into your heart and forgiving.
