Monday: Teachers should stick to basics

January 28, 2013

— Being a veteran of the Navy Submarine Service, I can’t stand to read about the flag being stomped on by the honors English teacher at Chapin High School. But to ruin his career over making a stupid mistake is a little too much. A public apology for his action would be sufficient.

What is it with honor’s English teachers? We just had one dismissed for having sex with her students at one school, and now another one is teaching our students social studies or political science lessons, when both should be teaching English.

Teachers are not there to teach our children life’s lessons, but the subjects about which they are qualified and hired to teach. That is what is wrong with our education system. They should teach math, science, English, etc. and not their opinions or politics.
