Tuesday: Columbians help save vacation

Published: January 29, 2013

— Sincere thanks to Columbia resident Thomas Hammond and Dennis Hiltner, proprietor of the Gourmet Shop, for returning my lost wallet and saving our vacation.

Apparently my wallet fell out of my coat as I got into our car after a great lunch at the Gourmet Shop. Mr. Hammond found it in the street and turned it over to Mr. Hiltner, including more than $200 in cash. Mr. Hiltner notified my bank that I’d lost the wallet with credit and debit cards and then kept it safe. Later his helpful staff were kind enough to interrupt serving their customers to verify my wallet had been found, and helped me retrieve it. Neither Mr. Hammond nor Mr. Hiltner would accept a reward.

Thank you for restoring our faith in people doing the right thing. We will always remember these kindnesses from Columbians.
