Reports are premature that Irmo High soccer coach Phil Savitz has been hired as the boys soccer coach at the new River Bluff High School, which is set to open this fall, according to school officials.

The Lexington 1 Schools Board of Trustees must vote to approve all personnel hiring recommendations, and did not vote to hire Savitz at its Jan. 15 meeting.

Irmo athletics director Bob Hanna said he has not received official notification from Savitz, and Savitz declined to

comment.

River Bluff principal Dr. Luke Clamp would not confirm that Savitz, a 33-year veteran at Irmo, had been offered or recommended for the position, citing Lexington 1 School District’s policies on personnel confidentiality.

“Should there be any personnel recommendations, the board will address them at its next meeting, which would be Feb. 19. But, at this time, we are not going to discuss any names or recommendations because that’s our policy,” Clamp said.

The Board of Trustees at its December meeting approved the hire of David Bennett as River Bluff athletics director and head football coach.

Since beginning his career at Irmo, Savitz has guided the program to 13 state championships and more than 20 state final appearances.
