13 years later, Richland County fugitive arrested

— A man on the run for more than a dozen years has been arrested, Richland County Sheriff’s deputies said Tuesday.

Rudolph Darby, 44, was arrested Tuesday morning in Waco, Texas after he was accused of giving police a false name and assaulting an officer. The 44-year-old had been on the run from the Richland County Sheriff’s Department since a crime spree 13 years ago.

Richland County deputies allege that on Dec. 11, 1999, Darby broke into a home and pointed a shotgun at the home’s owner before leading officers on a car chase and shooting at two deputies.

The suspect got away after the shootout and was on the lam until Tuesday’s arrest.

Darby is currently being held in Waco awaiting an extradition hearing. If he is extradited back to South Carolina, he faces several charges, including first-degree burglary, pointing and presenting a firearm, grand larceny, unlawful possession of a pistol and two counts of assault with intent to kill.
