LR girls clinch; boys are one win away

Published: January 30, 2013

Lower Richland’s girls basketball teams secured the No. 1 state playoff seed in Region 4-3A girls basketball with a blow-out win against Chapin on Tuesday at the Diamond Mine.

The undefeated Diamond Hornets (19-0, 8-0) got off to a sluggish start, but went on a 25-5 binge in the third quarter to win going away, 52-16. As usual, balance was the Lower Richland calling card. Dayonshe’ Mitchell was the nominal scoring leader with 11 points, but the senior guard had plenty of help from Breshay Johnson (9 points, 9 rebounds, 3 steals), Cailah Hicklin (9 points) and Dejah Williford (8 points).

Debbie Stroman’s team needs one more win to officially bag the outright championship.

The LR boys (14-8, 8-0), meanwhile, did not clinch but stayed firmly in command in the region title race with a 74-39 win over the Eagles. The Diamond Hornets need a win over A.C. Flora Friday on the road to secure the region’s top playoff seed, and the outright region championship.

behind Brandon Stroman (19 points), Marcus Edmond (17), Alonzo Gibson (13) and Cedric Davis (11) led the way against Chapin.
