SCHOOLS

PLEASANT HILL MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHER DOT HARDIN has received the Outstanding Contributions to Mathematics Education Award from the South Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

LEXINGTON 1 teachers received 2013 Spring Michelin Golden Apple Teacher Grants from the Lexington One Educational Foundation including Jena Sherban, Carolina Springs Elementary; Carol Court, Anedra Kelson and Amie Saunders, Carolina Springs Middle; Sharmen Oswald, Gilbert Middle; Denese Harris, Gilbert Primary; Theresa Johnson, Lexington Elementary; Angie Enlow and Jeanne McKinney; Meadow Glen Elementary; Susan Cathey, Midway Elementary; Angela List, Pleasant Hill Middle; and Denise Salters, White Knoll High.

THE PELION MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT COUNCIL has received the Commanding General’s Helping Hands Award from the U.S. Army. Student Council Members include Alex Bass, Jessica Hyder and Macey McLaurinn.

THREE RICHLAND 1 SCHOOLS collected the most food for less fortunate families during the district-wide Harvest Hope Food Drive Campaign. The winners include Brennen Elementary School, first place; Dreher High School, second place; and Hopkins Elementary School, third place.

COMMUNITY

JORGE ANDREW, Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center director, has been inducted into the South Carolina Tennis Hall of Fame.

THE LEXINGTON COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT has promoted Sam Gunter to the rank of lieutenant and William Wentz Bruner to the rank of master deputy. Devon Baird Hughes has been promoted to serve as a school resource officer and instructor for a public safety and criminal justice class at Batesburg-Leesville High.

YOUTH

IRMO HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR WILLIAM BOWMAN has been named first place winner of the 2013 Martin Luther King Jr. Dream Keeper scholarship. An award of $100 each was awarded to Harmonie Jade Frederick of Polo Road Elementary and Alyssa Brunson of Dent Middle School.

MILITARY

AIR FORCE AIRMAN CHAUNCEY T. WARD has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He is the son of Jessie Ward of Columbia.

ARMY NATIONAL GUARD PFC. IVAN K. MCFARLAN II has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson. He is the son of Allison and Ivan McFarlan of Blythewood.

NAVY CONSTRUCTIONMAN BENJAMIN D. THOMPSON, along with Seabees assigned to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 11, has donated 10 large boxes of food items to the Seabee Panty at Naval Construction Battalion Center, Gulfport, Miss. He is the son of Marilyn A. Thompson of Lexington and Benjamin D. Thompson of Leesville.

AIR FORCE AIRMAN ERICA A. MCQUEEN has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. She is the daughter of Paul and Alesia McQueen of Columbia.

MARINE CORPS PFC. ROBERT S. SEMMLER has graduated from recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island. He is a 2012 graduate of Camden Military Academy.

AIR NATIONAL GUARD AIRMAN 1ST CLASS KRYSTAL D. FAUST has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. She is the daughter of Viola Faust and Donny Faust, both of Columbia.

AIR FORCE AIRMAN JONATHAN D. TOMLINSON has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Bas, San Antonio, Texas. He is the son of Robin and Jon Tomlinson of Irmo.

AIR NATIONAL GUARD AIRMAN JAMES E. PERKINS has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He is the son of Trish Perkins of Irmo.
