Notebook: Region 4-3A hoops

Published: February 7, 2013

The scramble for state basketball playoff positioning in Region 4-3A was finally resolved in Tuesday’s final round.

The big new was on the boys side, where Chapin beat Camden in a do-or-die game and A.C. Flora caught Lower Richland in the chase for first place.

Chapin’s 57-52 win at Camden went down to the wire, and the Eagles ended up as the No. 3 seed thanks to a season sweep of Dreher. The Blue Devils also were the key factor in breaking the tie for the No. 1 seed. LR and ACF finished tied atop the standings with 8-2 records. The Diamond Hornets rated the No. 1 sweep thanks to a sweep of Dreher. Flora split with the Blue Devils.

Still, the Falcons and coach Leon Brunson could not have been more pleased with catching up with LR, which had a two-game lead with two games to play. Flora gave itself a chance to gain at least a share of the region championship by beating LR 72-58 last Friday. The Falcons need help on Tuesday, and got it from first-year Westwood. The Redhawks did not make the playoff cut, the Terry Dozier’s rookie shocked Lower Richland in the regular season finale, 61-47. Flora took advantage of the break by avenging a previous loss to archrival Dreher, winning 69-57 in the rematch.

On the girls side, a possible four-way tie for third place was averted when Chapin defeated Camden, 44-35.

A.C. Flora finished in a tie for fourth place with Westwood, but the Falcons get the postseason nod thanks to a season sweep of the Redhawks.

Undefeated Lower Richland and Dreher are the top two girls seeds.
