Sunday: Gov. Haley right to back prisons

Published: February 10, 2013

— On behalf of an earlier generation of corrections professionals, I applaud Gov. Nikki Haley’s pledge to address the conditions under which the Corrections Department operates our poorly equipped and understaffed prisons (“Lee prison riots fuel a call for more funds,” Feb. 3).

Warden Michael McCall and the dedicated people enter those places every day to protect the rest of us from unimaginable mayhem. They do it with only the resources remaining from years of austere budgets, legislative neglect and public apathy.

Regardless of how you feel about humane treatment and security of prison inmates, the staff who operate our correctional facilities are entitled to a safe place to work and sufficient resources to do what we expect of them. Gov. Haley has my unapologetic support on this one.
