Columbia, Red Cross launch major blood drive

February 10, 2013

A two-day blood drive seeks to collect 500 pints and donors will walk away with a bag of Starbucks coffee, the American Red Cross said.

The 14-hour event will be held Tuesday and Wednesday at the Metropolitan Convention Center, 1101 Lincoln St., from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day.

A typical blood drive has a goal of 35 pints, said Red Cross spokeswoman Jamie Muldrow.

A high demand for blood might spring from the blizzard that hit the Northeast over the weekend, which forced the cancellation of at least 50 blood drives in six affected states, Muldrow said.

Columbia donors will get a Red Cross T-shirt and will be eligible to win a $300 Walmart gift certificate. For more information, call (803) 312-5609 and speak to Kimberly Reaves. Inquiries also can be made at redcrossblood.org; enter sponsor code columbialifesavers.
