CAMDEN, SC — A Camden man who was ejected from his 1997 Ford Explorer SUV and killed in a traffic mishap wasn’t wearing his seat belt, Kershaw County coroner Johnny Fellers said Sunday.
Fellers identified the victim as John William Napper, 21. He died at the scene, Fellers said.
The SUV ran off the road, went down an embankment and overturned, Fellers and the S.C. Highway Patrol said.
The single-vehicle mishap happened around 8 p.m. Friday. The patrol gave no reason for the SUV to run off the road and said it is investigating.
Another person in the SUV also was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle, Fellers said. That passenger, who was not identified, as transported to Palmetto Richland hospital, which has the best emergency trauma center in the Midlands. Patrol officials also said they didn’t know who —- Napper or the other person — was driving.
