CAJ girls, Dreher are Monday survivors

February 12, 2013

C.A. Johnson joined Dreher as the only other Midlands winner in Monday’s state basketball playoff openers.

The Green Hornets girls (8-13) defeated Fox Creek 48-27 in the Class 1A Upper State bracket and will travel to face Region 1 champion McCormick (17-6). The Chiefs crushed Greenville Tech 59-26 on Monday.

CAJ has prevailed in the first round of the state playoffs in each of the past three seasons, but the Green Hornets have never made past the second round.

Elsewhere, Airport, Gilbert, Chapin and A.C. Flora saw their seasons come to an end with first-round losses.

The big surprise was a 56-49 loss by Region 5 champion Airport to Stall. The Eagles (15-9) had a 32-31 lead entering the fourth quarter, but the visiting Warriors surged to victory with a 25-17 run over the final eight minutes.

Elsewhere, Chapin, A.C. Flora and Gilbert all fell in Class 3A first-round games.

Chapin (12-12) was eliminated by Berea, 52-48. A.C. Flora (11-14) dropped a 57-42 decision to Region 2 champion Greenville. Gilbert (11-10) was thumped 58-18 by Hilton Head in its 3A postseason debut.
