The first disc golf course in a South Carolina state park is being built at Chester State Park thanks to a $30,000 grant from a local group.
The 27-hole tournament-grade course, designed by Innova Disc Golf of Rock Hill, will spread out over 35 acres behind shelter No. 3 and the parks primitive campground. Work on the course is expected to begin in March and be finished by the summer. Play on the course will be free with park admission.
Disc golf is similar to traditional golf, except a Frisbee-like disc is thrown to metal baskets. The courses work around a parks existing typography and trees.
Construction of the Chester course will be paid for by a grant from the Lutz Foundation, established in the memory of Chester residents Charlence H. Lutz and Anna E. Lutz.
