Heathwood Halls boys and Ben Lippens girls win preliminary round games this week to qualify for the SCISA state basketball tournament this week in Sumter.
Heathwood Hall beat defending SCISA champion Laurence Manning Academy 59-56 on Saturday behind 21 points by Bradley Singleton and 15 by Nygel Vaughn. The Highlanders (12-12) will face archrival Hammond (20-4) in a Class 3A quarterfinal game at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Sumter Civic Center.
Ben Lippen (8-13) advanced to the Sumter phase of the tournament for the first time in many years thanks to a 35-32 win over Hilton Head Christian on Friday in Charleston. Corrie Hester led the Falcons to the big win with a 19-point performance. The BL reward is a third game this season against Heathwood Hall (18-7) at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday in the Class 3A quarterfinals at the Sumter Civic Center. Heathwood whipped the Falcons twice during the Region 1-3A campaign.
Hammonds girls (16-6) begin their title quest with a 3:30 p.m. quarterfinal game on Tuesday. Cardinal Newmans boys (15-10) square off against Northwood Academy in the quarterfinals at 8 p.m. on Wednesday.
The 3A boys and girls semifinal games are on Friday with the championship showdowns on Saturday at the Sumter Civic Center.
