SCHOOLS

GILBERT HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS have passed the Certified Nurse Aide examination. The students include Jessica Carder, Devyn Hogan, Lexi Kalex, Lauren McClure, Haley Phillips, Emily Pound, Destiny Price and Amy Turner.

RED BANK ELEMENTARY’S FIRST LEGO TEAM has won the “Rising Stars” judges’ award at the FIRST LEGO League regional competition. Team members include David Arnold, Jordan Balestrero , Zachary Balestrero , Britton Deese, Carter Havens, Katherine Medlin, Anna Oliver and Gibran Ortiz.

ROCKY CREEK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS Ciara Alderman and Cooper Branham won first and second place in the state, respectively, in the National Career Development Association Poetry Contest. Both students will continue to compete at the national level.

TWO RICHLAND ONE STUDENTS have been named as candidates for the prestigious 2013 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. Luke Thompson, A.C. Flora High School; and Alessandra Tuel, Dreher High School; were among 560 semifinalists from across the nation invited to apply.

CATAWBA TRAIL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TEACHER VICTORIA PASCO has been named the South Carolina 2012 Teacher of the Year by the South Carolina Association of Conservation Districts.

THE BATESBURG-LEESVILLE HIGH SCHOOL MARCHING BAND has been selected to perform at the 2015 London New Year’s Day Parade.

MILITARY

NAVY SEAMAN RECRUIT KENDALL D. FRAZIER has graduated from U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. He is the son of Krystal N. and the stepson of Charles O. Wesley of Winnsboro.

NAVY SEAMAN RECRUIT ALEXIS C. MIZELL has graduated from U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. He is a 2012 graduate of South Carolina Virtual Charter School in Columbia.

MARINE CORPS PFC. JOHN T. COMMINS has graduated from U.S. Marine recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island. He is the son of Maryann and Thomas J. Commins of Prosperity.

NAVY SEAMAN DEREK LEGETTE has graduated from U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. He is the son of Carol Legette of Columbia.

ARMY SPEC. JOHN M. KEARSE has returned to the U.S. after being deployed overseas at a forward operating base to serve in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

AIR FORCE AIRMAN DARREN A. HAILE has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He is the son of Nathan Haile of Columbia.
